At Busy Bees Education & Training, we understand that every learner’s journey is unique. Some learners progress quickly, while others face challenges that test their confidence, resilience and determination.
This is the inspiring story of Elise who refused to give up and whose perseverance ultimately led to achieving her Functional Skills Maths qualification.
A Journey That Took Time
Elise’s Functional Skills Maths journey began in September 2022 and came to a successful end in March 2026. Over the course of more than three years, Elise experienced setbacks, frustration, self-doubt and disappointment. However, she also discovered resilience, determination and the importance of receiving the right support.
At the beginning of the journey, understanding the maths content proved difficult. Although Elise completed tasks as best she could, a lack of confidence and strong foundational knowledge made it challenging to make consistent progress.
Repeated exam attempts and mock tests without feeling fully prepared gradually affected confidence levels, creating a cycle of trying, struggling and feeling unsure how to improve.
The Turning Point
Everything changed in August 2025 when Elise began working with her tutor, Rachel.
Rather than rushing through topics, Rachel focused on rebuilding understanding from the ground up. Through regular Teams sessions twice a week, each topic was explored carefully to ensure Elise fully understood the content before moving forward.
The consistent structure and support made a significant difference. Homework tasks after each session helped reinforce learning, strengthen revision habits and improve confidence when approaching exam questions.
For the first time, Elise was not simply memorising answers but genuinely understanding the maths behind them.
Learning Through Persistence
As the months progressed, Elise began taking mock exams again. Although progress initially felt slow, improvements became noticeable over time.
Elise also transitioned to the Highfield exam board and began achieving passes that, while close to the boundary, provided something that had been missing for a long time: hope.
In February 2026, Elise sat her first Highfield Functional Skills Maths exam feeling more confident than ever before. When the results arrived, she had narrowly missed a pass by just two marks.
After investing so much time and effort into revision and preparation, the result was devastating. Success felt incredibly close, yet still out of reach.
Despite the disappointment, she refused to give up.
The Moment Everything Changed
Three weeks later, Elise sat the exam again in March 2026.
This exam paper felt even more difficult and, by the end of the assessment, she was convinced another failure was inevitable.
Then came the phone call.
She had passed.
After more than three years and around ten exam attempts, Elise had finally achieved her Functional Skills Maths qualification. The moment was overwhelming, emotional and rewarding after years of perseverance.
Even more significantly, after beginning sessions with her tutor in August 2025, it took just seven months to complete both Functional Skills Maths and English qualifications — something she once believed would never happen.
Why Support Matters
Elise’s experience demonstrates that success is not always about how quickly goals are achieved. Sometimes, success comes from finding the right support, building confidence gradually and continuing forward even when challenges feel overwhelming.
At Busy Bees Education & Training, learners are supported every step of the way by tutors who understand that encouragement and confidence-building are just as important as the qualification itself.
Achieving Functional Skills qualifications can open the door to new opportunities, career progression and important milestones such as End-Point Assessment (EPA).
A Message to Other Learners

Progress takes time, and every small improvement matters.
With patience, determination and the right support network, achieving your goals is possible — even when the journey feels difficult.
