Entry Requirements

Entry is at the discretion of the centre and must be supported by setting manager. Candidates should be in a paid job where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence for this level this should be combined with the opportunity to train for or already hold the position at senior supervisory and management level.
 
The SVQ level 4 can be offered in any of the following modes:

  • Within full-time job
  • Within part-time job as long as it is the candidates main job.

Social Services Children and Young People SVQ Level 4 (SCQF Level 9)

During this course, candidates will develop skills and understanding in multiple areas of childcare. You must achieve 4 mandatory and 4 optional units:

  • Maintain effective communication systems and practice - Mandatory
  • Lead practice for health and safety in the work setting - Mandatory
  • Take responsibility for the continuing professional development of yourself and others - Mandatory
  • Lead practice that promotes the safeguarding of children and young people - Mandatory
  • Lead programmes for the promotion of children and young people's development - Optional
  • Lead provision for babies and children in partnership with parents and carers - Optional
  • Lead curriculum provision of early education for children - Optional
  • Lead the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children - Optional
  • Lead the support of children's communication - Optional
  • Lead the support for children's creativity - Optional
  • Lead the support for children's mathematical learning, exploration and problem solving - Optional
  • Evaluate the environment for children and families - Optional
  • Lead the revision of policies, procedures and practice for registration and inspection - Optional
  • Provide information about children and families' services - Optional
  • Lead the monitoring of procedures, policies, and practice in partnership with families to benefit children's care, learning and development - Optional

Social Services Children and Young People SVQ Level 4 (SCQF Level 9)

Depending on employment setting and career choice candidates may study for an additional management award such as SVQ Leadership and Management of Care Services (SCQF level 10) or for a degree/PDA in Childhood Practice. Candidates may transfer across to the adult sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare.

The progression route for each candidate will depend on their job role and level of responsibility.

Off-the-Job training (OTJ) is a requirement for all apprenticeship standards at all levels. Apprentices must spend 20% of their working hours undertaking OTJ throughout their learning or practical period. OTJ is defined as “learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads toward the achievement of an apprenticeship.”

Off-the-Job training must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship programme and teach new knowledge, skills and/or behaviours that will help you reach competence in your occupation.
