The Level 3 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF level 7 allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council, Skills for Care and Development to ensure relevance to the sector.
This SVQ is suitable for individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification. The target audience for the SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) are people who are practitioners in early years settings and daycare for children and young people. It is a requirement by the SSSC that everyone employed in this capacity should be working towards achievement of this qualification.
Employing an apprentice is an opportunity to hire a person into a work-based training programme where they will gain an industry recognised qualification (SVQ) and core skills. MAs save costs because the learning provider can access funding from Skills Development Scotland to cover the costs of the qualification.
An MA is a training programme and you should keep this in mind. It is important to provide robust induction and support throughout. Within this apprenticeship core skills must also be completed as well as the SVQ. As assessment is normally carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work and allows candidates to generate evidence based on the actual work they are carrying out.

Off-the-Job training (OTJ) is a requirement for all apprenticeship standards at all levels. Apprentices must spend 20% of their working hours undertaking OTJ throughout their learning or practical period. OTJ is defined as “learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads toward the achievement of an apprenticeship.”
Off-the-Job training must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship programme and teach new knowledge, skills and/or behaviours that will help you reach competence in your occupation.
